Is it worth fixing transy on 97 sable?

My 97 sable decided to act up on me this afternoon. I'm pretty sure it is the transmission cause when I brake when I try to hit the accelerator the engine revs but the car doesn't move. When it does, it jerks and will jerks until it is stopped. The car has 118,000 miles on it. I can't convince my husband that the car is 11 years old and I probably need a new one instead of putting the money into a new transy, he wants me to spend the 1500-2000 to get the transsy fixed, knowing the car is gonna start having other problems.
