Is Artemis Fowl a bad type of hero/role model?

I am considering buying the book for my 11 year old nephew. I've read tons of great reviews, but the descriptions always start out "brilliant criminal mastermind." Does he have a redeeming side? Do his actions encourage kids to be bad?
